Academic year 2027 to 2028

In response to the views shared by schools and settings, including through an opinion survey, Surrey County Council has made the decision that community and voluntary controlled schools in Surrey will have a one-week autumn half term in academic year 2027/28.

To make this change, five days will be added to the summer holiday in July 2028.

Please see attached the determined dates for community and voluntary controlled schools and settings for the 2027/28 academic year.

The reasons given for wanting to revert to a one-week autumn half term included views that:

  • children are more tired in the summer term and extending it by one week would mean they are less likely to learn.
  • attendance in the final week of the summer term would be adversely affected.
  • a longer summer term and a shorter summer holiday would affect staff and student wellbeing.
  • children in Reception will have just settled in and a two-week October half term would disrupt this.
