Inspiring a Love for Lifelong Learning

Results and Phonics

Phonics teaching and learning at APPS.

At APPS we teach phonics, using the Department for Education's recommended systematic phonic scheme, know as 'Letters and Sounds'. We also support our children with developing their phonic knowledge and application through the 'Phonics Play' programme. We use a variety of teaching techniques to meet the learning needs of all of our young learners.

We hold information sessions throughout the year, to support our parents and carers in developing their phonic knowledge so that we can all work in partnership to help our children with developing the necessary skills to be successful with early reading and writing. Our first phonic, reading and writing information session will be held on the 26th September 2018 with sessions at 3.30p.m and 5.30p.m for our new to EYFS parents and carers.

When our children are in year 1, they will have many opportunities to learn new sounds and to consolidate their phonic knowledge and understanding to ensure a rapid development of their early reading, spelling and writing skills. In June of each year, the children in year 1, take part in a statutory phonic screening assessment. To prepare the children for the screening and to make sure that they are comfortable with the process before June, the children will individually and with their class teacher, practice several previous papers throughout their time in year 1. This is a fun activity and the children usually love to share their phonic knowledge as they say and read both 'real' and 'alien' words!
