Curriculum

  • Our Centre provides specialist teaching of Literacy, Numeracy and PSHE.
  • We run a three-year rolling programme across KS1 and KS2 to ensure our pupils learn through a range of interesting topics in each key stage.
  • A life skills programme is run in the afternoons. Each year group spends one afternoon a week with members of our intervention team learning a variety of skills to prepare them for their future.

Interventions

  • Speech and Language Therapy: We have two speech and language therapists on site for three days a week. Our trained SEN assistant provides further speech and language interventions on the alternate days
  • Social and Emotional Support: All children are base lined and profiled using Thrive. Identified children receive Thrive interventions in addition to the social and emotional work children engage with in class
  • Occupational Therapy: Activities and exercises detailed in a child’s EHCP is carried out during the school day. Additional OT activities are planned in class
  • Cooking: Children have the opportunity to learn and develop culinary skills and safety in the kitchen throughout the year

"The school is strongly inclusive and equal opportunities are well promoted. Good relationships are evident throughout the school. Discrimination is not tolerated."     OFSTED 2014

Inclusion

  • Early Years – 6: We aim for children to be included with their mainstream class for around 50% of the time. This is usually during the afternoon but we work closely with mainstream staff to tailor additional times when it would be beneficial for the children to be included with their mainstream class.
  • Children are supported in groups of up to four by a learning support assistant whilst in their mainstream class.

"Pupils in the Acorn Centre make outstanding progress because of high-quality teaching."
